Re:

so I bought the maxtrons unit ExyJef was suggesting.

It's a great unit. After playing with it and getting it set up the way I want, it does everything I need it to, including the ability to program the steering wheel controls.

Great software too... after looking at what the koason and some of the other units offer, I'd say the maxtron unit has the prettiest UI.

The area it lacks the most BY FAR is the ipod implementation. Since these generic chinese units are mostly the same, I don't know if that's a problem with maxtrons, or if they all have weak ipod integration.

When I turn off the car and turn it back on, it's a crapshoot whether it will pick up the ipod automatically, or if it goes back to the radio. Browsing artists or albums takes ages, and you can't skip to a certain letter, you have to go from A-Z.

So, these kitchen sink units are a HUGE improvement over the stock HU. However, if you are excited about the possibility to having full featured ipod control, you'll be disappointed.

Re:

I have a question though...

does anyone have a t-31 x-trail and know the pin locations of the aux and usb ports in the center console? I want to tap into the existing wires and splice them into my HU instead of running brand new wires to replace what's already in the center console.

I have the t-31 service manual and it never even seems to mention the aux and usb ports, let alone how they are wired.

Anyone who has any info on this I would greatly appreciate it!!

Re: "Kitchen Sink" GPS/DVD & Multimedia Head units reviews & options

Hi

Purchased a Pioneer single din to replace the standard in the T31 2008. After a bit of work, finally got the right connections but there is no power to the stereo ? I came across this thread and found the post by steve50.

The looms just plugged straight in,they only went one way so you could not make a mistake,The power for the antenna which is the blue wire on the antenna adapter I connected to the blue wire from the unit that had sub on it(not the RCA plug)

There is only two blue wires that are not connected and connecting them doesn't do anything ?

Do I need the separate Aerial adapter too - is that my missing link? I have the Pioneer harness to match the deck and the correct harness to match the car. The 2nd smaller cord in the car is not connect to anything.

Happy to take a pic of the stereo hanging out in it's current state if that helps emoticon

thanks so much, in advance.

Re: "Kitchen Sink" GPS/DVD & Multimedia Head units reviews & options

There are many people that have installed different units over time. Anyone got any feedback now they have used it for some time? Has anyone got one setup with dual zones with headrest screens for the kids?

Regards

Lindsay

Re:

Anyone know if its possible to use an external mic with the koason type units?
I get pretty average audio.

May be related, but the front dome lights in the TS... there is a "sensor" of some type in there. Maybe a mic used with the original head units bluetooth?

If you are talking about a mike for the bluetooth, the units come with an extension mike.

ldalm,
You will need an antenna adapter. I think I might have one, Aerpro makes them.

Re: Maxtron Unit

Did any of you folk have any issues fitting the reverse camera. The ebay depiction isnt that clear ( to me that is). I assume the 'backlight' referred to is the reversing light circuit but the second reference to 'back.camera wire of DVD / is a little confusing
thanks

Dave

Re:

Thanks. I can vaguely remember a separate bunch of cables with a mic plug. Hope I still have it.

Any idea on what the 'thing' in the front dome light housing is?? Its a small black cube ~2cm with an opening and 2? wired connected. The light housing also has a hole in it so all I can think of is thermometer or the mic used for the factory bluetooth.

Reverse camera looks like a major PIA to install. Im going to have mine done professionally, along with some other bits.

Re: Re:

Well it all went in - finally . You're right though MrMez, the reverse camera was a PITA but only because I didn't check that it all worked BEFORE I ran the cable. Took a while to come to the conclusion that the cable was a dead'un - luckily I had a 10 metre replacement handy. Works well now though apart from getting the steering wheel bluetooth to work which is disappointing. Thinking about running an electromagnetic front parking setup from UK in as the missus cant see the front left too well
