Re: "Kitchen Sink" GPS/DVD & Multimedia Head units reviews & options
Thanks to JohnQld
&
The patience from the Bride
Well the new unit arrived on Thursday and installed yesterday. The finished result looks good.
Right, lets get started. Take note of this!!! If your OEM head unit has Bluetooth, make sure you turn it off in the setting menu, before you start anything!!!
This makes sure that it’s not trying to connect while you are running the new unit.
I started with the install of the reverse camera. It is a replacement of the licence plate light.
Bloody hell. WHAT A JOB!!! To start with, all of the interior panels came off in the back, including the tailgate.
This is the only way you can get to the chrome section where the lights are! Thanks to the ESM, I was able to locate all of the clips. I did find 2 new friends with this project, my mate Jimmy, (Jimmy Bar), and his mate, Yellow Snake ($3 plastic cable snake).
I would have to say that these 2 tools, made the install all that little bit easier.
Once I had removed all of the paneling from the back, which took me about an hour and half, I then replaced the existing light, with the camera.
I then had to start wiring it in. Here is where the fun began!! Lol. The power cable for the camera was too short, so I had to run figure 8 cable to extend it, so that I could tap into the 12v reverse power in the back left hand pillar.
Then I ran the yellow RGA lead from the front head unit to the rear. This cable also came with a “Mystery” Red wire, about 300mm in length. Thanks to the help of john, we were able to determine that this is a signal wire that also needed 12v.
So, as I have hands the size of Aaron Sandilands feet, I found it very difficult to do some nice splicing work, so I improvised and made short extensions for the cable joints. There is not much room for error, tapping into the 2 wires, so I would suggest extreme caution when doing this. So with all of the cables run in, and connections made, it was time to take out the OEM system and put the new one in!
The front fascia comes out very easy. I found it easier to start pulling from the top left and right sides just about the head unit! BE CAREFUL NOT TO LOSE ANY OF THE WHITE CLIPS AND LET THEM FALL INTO NEVERLAND! I almost lost 1!
Unplug the hazard light loom from the fascia and put it to 1 side.
There are 4 screws to take out, with a Phillips head screw driver, to get the head unit out! Once the screws are out, the unit and brackets come straight out. Unplug the harnesses from the unit, and put it to 1 side.
You will need to buy, if you don’t already them, a set of TORX keys. Available from bunnings in a set for about $45. Worth every cent! You will need a T20 key to take the screws out of the brackets from the OEM head unit!
The put the new unit into the bracket and place the screws, “That come with the new unit” in place and tighten! The screws that come with the OEM version are too long and can cause damage to the new unit.
Before you connect any cables up, take out the top glove box in the center of the dash. This is in the series 4, T31’s! It has 5 clips in the front of it, that you can only access once you have the radio out! You can see the clips on diagram below, point 4.There is also 5 metal clips in the back of this. You will need to lift the unit from one side to the other, to release the clips. Some force may be needed here, as well as some spare skin for the knuckles!
Drill or cut holes for the GPS antenna and the ipod cable. It just seemed like the easiest and most logical place for both of them.
Once these cable are in, connect them onto the new unit, as well as the other 2, yes that’s right, 2 harnesses to the new unit, using the ISO harness they supply.
The 3rd one is used for the telephone buttons. I have not been able to find a unit that uses this harness yet! I am working on a workaround with John.
There is no need to cut anything in the back, as there is heaps of room for these units and cables and harnesses.
Now place the new unit into it’s new home!
Once the 4 screws are back in, connect the harness up to the front fascia again and put it back in.
The finished result should look like this!
Now with unit I installed, I discovered after the install was all done, that the microphone did not work. It didn’t use the built in mic that the series has, so as I need that feature as I’m on the phone all day as a sales rep, I ripped out this unit and promptly looked and found a new unit.
The new system also behaves better too, and is also faster! If there is 1 thing I can suggest, is that you do your homework, if you use ebay for purchases. Make sure you can return faulty units at their expense! Make sure they are a registered business.
The new unit came from Elinz. Registered and in Melbourne.
The built in mic has been disabled and the clarity of my speech while driving is awesome!
In all, the total install took me a day, but it was planned. I had allocated 2 days for the job, so I was stoked that I achieved this result sooner!
Thanks for reading guys. If you have any questions, feel free to PM me, or put your questions in this topic.

Re: "Kitchen Sink" GPS/DVD & Multimedia Head units reviews & options
Hi Guys
Cutting wires ,soldering all to much I bought a GPS/DVD/TV unit from Hong Kong off Ebay that has a program in unit to find the various phone buttons and install them, no wires need cutting, you push steering wheel button and button on screen it finds steering wheel button and saves it,just need to do all phone buttons seperately, even copies Phonebook from Iphone only problem not in alphabetical order and cant use up/down button on wheel.
It also has usb and ipod cable running from rear of unit into centre console, has micro sd slot for maps and sd card with downloaded music.
It also came with free reversing camera.
Check it out at maxtrons.com model mx 3002. It works great gps spot on.
Better description at ebay #280806234946
Regards
Jeff
