Had noticed the top couple of blocks not showing on mine sometimes but the distance to run always seemed ok. Last weekend was driving along and noticed the fuel gauge and distance to run dropping dramatically as if from a major leak. Stopped the car and looked everywhere, no leaks. Started the car again, fuel quantity and distance to run slowly climbed back to normal.
Would be interested in reading what you have found and yes, I consistently get over 500k to a tank.

This is a silly way of posting fixes on the forum.
We all know that Series 1 and 2 owners have suffered this problem in one way or another and there could be hundreds on this forum alone.
If you have a fix for this issue and you want to share it, post it in the DIY section so we can all benefit.
If you don't want to share it, keep it to yourself.
Other members don't hesitate posting such fixes on the forum, it is then up to each member to choose whether or not to do the mod.

Whoa! I've just dropped by to see responses, only to feel I'm being flogged!
My apologies to anyone I've offended by my approach.
The reason I am 'testing the waters' is simple: many years ago, on an unrelated yet active forum, I made some quite detailed, complex postings about a couple of user's technical problems. (I spent MANY hours compiling my solutions.)
There were NO responses to these postings and only a couple (literally) of views, even after several months.
I felt my investment in time had been wasted.
So, not wanting to repeat that error, I figured I would measure expressions of interest in this topic (since the fault is clearly several years old and people may just have learned to 'live with it') and, if significant (10+ user?), would be prepared to write a detailed account of what I did.
If the interest was only by 2 or 3 people, I would write a simple and short summary.
I don't think that's unreasonable.
I apologise if my approach was not "That's how it work on our forum", but it is my time and I know just how frustrating this defect is.
Since my tail is between my legs (a little), here is my short version:

Remove both fuel senders.
Clean the impurities off the printed circuit track attached to the float arm.
Ensure only the area marked in red, along the length of each track, is the only part of the circuit 'cleaned'.
Do not damage the area marked 'resistors'.
Re-install.
The rest of the other (helpful) images are on photobucket
I should note, I have encountered a fall back of 1 segment (12 of 13) on the last tank fill.
Initial resistance measurements suggest further impurities. I have yet to investigate further...

What did you use for cleaning the track/circuit board?
By the way, I am sure you have seen the detailed DIY Guides section on our forum which lists every imaginable modification, fix and improvement idea for the X-TRAIL. This is a result of many hours, many reports and contributions by many members of our forum who have asked nothing in return. We are all just happy to share this information with one another and unlike other forums, we do respond to such posts and it will generate a meaningful discussion, so your time isn't "wasted" at all.
