Rear bumper replacement...

I managed to put a crease in the rubber rear bumper on my 2004 ST X-Trail. It is barely noticeable, but I know it is there and it bugs me. I am sure it could be repaired by a competent bumper repair shop, but I would not be surprised to find I could purchase a like-new used bumper at a wrecking yard for about the same price as the repairs, and just swap it over for dented original. Should even be able to find the same colour, I expect.

Anyone have any experience removing and replacing the rear bumper on an X-Trail? I wouldn't expect it to be a very difficult task. I spent a long time searching this site but could find no reference to replacing the rear bumper.

The bumper is not modified in any way...no trailer hitch etc.

Thanks...Glen

Hi Glen,

The T30 rear bumper is super easy to remove, all you need to do is remove all screws of the rear mud-flaps (I think there are 3 of them on each side) and then remove the 2 main bolts holding the bumper in place on the tailgate side and then lift the whole bumper up to slide it off the alignment clips.

It is explained further in the service manual:

And yes, you will be able to find the rear bumper at the wreckers for as cheap as $150 to $200 bucks!

Re: Rear bumper replacement...

Jal...thanks so much for that info. I figured it was a fairly straightforward job, but not knowing the location of all the fasteners could have been a nightmare.

Now I just gotta start cruising the internet wrecking yards to find me a replacement bumper. Know anyone who might want to buy a slightly creased, used, rear bumper from a 2004 X-Trail?

lol...Glen

Re: Rear bumper replacement...

Well, in the end, I jammed out of the idea of doing the job myself...not because I thought it was too tough for me, but because the cost for having it professionally repaired was so reasonable.

I took the vehicle to a Plastic & Vinyl repair shop here in Brisbane. The owner quoted $220 to remove, repair, repaint & re-install the bumper. It took him 10 minutes to remove the bumper...overnight to repair & repaint it...and 20 minutes to re-install it the next day!!! I wasted more than TWO DAYS just trying to find a good-condition used bumper at a wrecking yard.

The paint is a perfect match and I am completely satisfied with the results. Gonna take the wife's '97 Pulsar to the shop to repair a number of parking scars on her front bumper.

Thanks, Jal, for your help...sorry I didn't put it to actual use. I'll keep the schematic for my next ding!

No worries Glen, sometimes it is easier and more convenient to let the professionals deal with it indeed.

Glad it's all sorted.
