Re:

Hi John,

My question to you is very simple.

The points currently in the roof are designed to withstand a certain weight (around 70Kgs) using the factory roof racks, so do you think you can increase the weight your roof can handle by fitting a 3rd roof rack and have you considered the fact that by increasing the load on the roof you are also increasing the chances of a roll-over due to increased roof weight?

John, I'm quite sure that what you are looking at can be done with parts readily available from places such as Rhino Rack. Their Pioneer rack looks like it might tick most of the boxes.

Re: Fitting extra (3rd) roof rack

Hi Jalal,

I do think that a 3rd support would increase the weight capacity of the roof, purely due to the fact that you're spreading the load. I really don't know what the mount points are like at the rear though, so I won't comment too much on that. I will also guarantee that the stated load ratings will have a 2 or 3 times factor of safety incorporated as is the case with any structure/structural component (meaning the actual load capacity is much higher than stated - though you're getting into grey areas trying to say exactly how much is ok).

That said, I'm thinking more about bulky objects as, like you mentioned, putting too much weight up top raises the vehicles centre of gravity and can make things dangerous (esp. offroad). Also, functionally I wouldn't mind being able to clamber around up there when the vehicles stationary (and not too loaded as that'd be above the stated load rating straight away). This isn't something that'd live on the car if it ever got built - it'd only be on for trips.

Alan, I hadn't actually seen Rhino's Pioneer rack, but it's a similar concept to OL's rebadged and in my opinion overpriced Rackmaster (I think they're made in South Africa?). These are designed for use with the 2 front anchor points. So like in the images, something like these would be a good base for the left and centre images in my last post. Any idea what the pioneer rack is worth?

As I mentioned, however, the point of exploring the 3rd mount point is to try and utilise the full length of the roof. Plus, like I said, I think the short options centred on the front 2 mounts simply look a bit funny (getting fussy I know emoticon ). So my post was to try and stimulate some discussion regarding the image at the far right which would need the 3rd mount point (hence posting in this thread). There's no way you could cantilever a rack that far to the rear of the car without going to bulky size aluminium sections, and applying probably too much uplift loading to the front mount points.

Don't forget, I'm just thinking and scheming, the associated benefits may not be worth it at the end of the day. Thanks again for the input though.

Re: Fitting extra (3rd) roof rack

John - that looks like exactly what I'm planning on building. I'll be getting on to it as soon as I finish my other jobs around the house but hopefully will be before Christmas. My thoughts on the weight limits are to use the roof for packing clothing and bedding and other light stuff and put heavy things in the back of the car.

I'll be sure to post pictures on what I manage to build as soon as I get it out of the concept stage and get the metal work underway.

Re: Fitting extra (3rd) roof rack

Ian, I'm definitely interested in your progress if you tackle this in the next couple of months. We're still away for the next little while, so I'd really appreciate some detailed photos if you start getting into that rear mount point (from underneath as well as above)!

I managed to get a look at the workshop manual which sketches out the spoiler mounts in some detail. As the sketches are generally perspective and not plan and section, they're simply indicative and not all that clear on exactly what's going on. Obviously they're detailed enough to get into it and pull the car apart for a look (if you're where your car is) - you just need the time and sufficient curiosity/motivation to pull out your roof liner.

Slight complication for easily putting the rack on and taking it off again, then replacing the spoiler blanks in the roof rails, is that the bolt screws into the blanks from the inside the roof. At this stage I'm thinking that the simplest and neatest way of addressing this problem would be to accurately cut out a small hole in the roof lining, so you can access the mounting bolt without pulling the whole thing out (filling the hole at other times with an unobtrusive colour coded rubber blank of some sort so it looks like it's meant to be there). I'm still chewing on ideas to flip the mount point around so you don't need to access things from inside. Have you thought about this at all?

Are you planning on using aluminium or steel? Please use this thread to keep us updated on the build progress (with photos!).

Re: Fitting extra (3rd) roof rack

G,day
We do a lot of kayaking and know what you mean about the overhang that's why we bought the genuine carrier for our new T31 {pick up tomorrow}. Alternatively making up a brace from the nudge bar with a T frame could work for you. When I was into hang gliding that;s how I carried the glider around on our trusty old Subaru. Back then I made up a frame that bolted straight onto the bull bar. Shouldn't be too hard to do the same with he XTrail.

After much discussion with the technical guys at Rhino Rack this seems like the best solution.

Re:

Hey Alan,

I know its been a while since the last post in this thread, but I too am looking at getting the 3rd rack put in at the back.

Is it possible to bolt a gutter into the roof, on the inside of the factory black roof rails, and then add just one roof rack rail? How height adjustable are they - so they'll be the same height of my prorack whisbar's (normal, not HD).

Looking at add the 3rd rack for both weight and carrying area. The proracks are rated 75kg, so adding the last rail should get me close to the 'maximum' 100kg. But by having 3 racks, I can start looking at the xl and xxl roof baskets...
It'd be nice to be able to load it up to the maximum 75kg, but also nice and easy to go camping with 3 or 4 ppl in 1 car!

Re:

In theory it should be possible to pad mount (short track section) a third bar and use spacers if the height need adjusting. I'd just need a vehicle to do the measurements on...

Apologies in advance, for not having any details other than the photo itself, but be prepared to have your mind blown boys&girls. I drove past this when I was in Tuggerah adopting my new puppy a bit over a week ago...
