Re: T31 Series 3 & 4 Eclipse Head Unit

thanks jalalski
how did you do it? did you buy the relay kit or another way?

is it easy to pull the head unit out or do you have to pull apart the dash?

Re:

I didn't do it myself, my auto electrician done it for me when he wired-up the headrest DVDs but he told me it is only getting one wire wired to chassis of the car and that's it. As for getting to the back of the unit it is only a matter of pulling/unclipping the sides of the fascia (the silver bits) and un-screwing the bolts holding the head unit in place.

Re:

You have to use a lot of force to pull the fascia off. I pulled the lower part out first and then the top. It comes off with all the air electric controls so you have to 'move it aside' to continue the work.
Then you will see 2 screws at the top and a screw either side. (4 in total). The top screws have earthing 'spade' connectors that slide out so remember to put them back when re-installing.
Once the screws are out you can sit the whole unit on the dash (use protection!).
In amongst the wiring there is a small white connector with a few wires. Find the red/white wire and cut it leaving about 30cm length at the Eclipse end.
On the end that goes into the car (and eventually to the handbrake) you must insulate the cut with tape to stop it from accidentally shorting out to the chassis as this will cause the car to think the handbrake is on!
Now, with the red/white wire that goes the the Eclipse, you need to connect it to the chassis (earth it).
I did this by stripping back the insutalion about 1cm. Then on the side of the Eclipse there is a mounting plate screwed on. Loosen the plate, tuck the red/white wire under it and tighten down the plate again. Make sure it is tightly secure and won't easily pull out.
Then its just a matter of reinstalling the unit back into the dash with the 4 screws (remembering to put the 2 earthing 'spade' connectors back where they came from).

While I had the unit out I also extended the 'video/audio in' and 'video out' cables through the hole where the USB cable went. This allow me to feed an external media device into the Eclipse and view it under the 'TAPE' menu.

PLEASE DON'T DRIVE WHILE THE DVD IS PLAYING AS IT COULD KILL YOU AND YOUR FAMILY!!!!

I only did the above modification as I use the exy as a camera support vehicle when shooting television shows. This gives the director in car viewing of what we are shooting.

I haven't tried it yet but I think you can play a DVD etc out the 'video out' connector while viewing the navigation on the Eclipse, thus alleviating the 'need to watch the DVD while driving' syndrome. Did I mention that watching a DVD while driving could kill you?

In conclusion it would take approx 20 mins to do the mod.

Baz,
You're a legend! I was just about to write that I had left a wiring diagram in this thread a few posts earlier (which is handy to sort which wire is doing what), but meanwhile your detailed description came in.
Thanks for explaining this to us. Always good to learn from people who are a step ahead....

Gunter

Re: T31 Series 3 & 4 Eclipse Head Unit

i am trying to download the file "synctool" from naviextras.com which should allow me to update maps myself but the file does not exist anywhere. the links always take me back to the download page which only has the toolbox file but not the sync tool.

does anyone have the sync tool file to send to me or know of its location?

thanks

Re: T31 Series 3 & 4 Eclipse Head Unit

Hi xtommo,
I just checked the Eclipse link for the official download here: https://eclipse.naviextras.com/shop/portal/downloads
and I could download the SyncTool from there without problems.
Give it another try, maybe the download server was down when you tried it?
Let me know if you still have problems downloading it.

Regards,
Gunter
