T31 Additional power outlet in dashboard storage box

After picking up my new X-Box I didn't like to see cables draped all over the console to power up the GPS mounted on the windscreen. To overcome this I have added a 12v power outlet inside the dashboard storage box so that all you see is a short length of cable coming out of the compartment to the GPS.

Make sure you are parked on flat ground with the handbrake securely on as you will be bypassing the transmission lock during the installation!!!

Parts needed:
Power outlet extension cable
2 x wire connectors
Total cost around $10.00

Tools required:
Pliers (to clamp the wire connectors)
Wire cutters
Drill and drill bit
Multimeter
A short length of "Yellow tongue" to help feed the wire behind the dash

Total time:
Less than 30 minutes

What to do - Purchase an extension cable from the local auto shop (the type that has a male connection on one end to plug into the power outlet and the other end has the female) because they are significantly cheaper than the female socket purchased as a single piece????? To fit the modification I removed the dashboard compartment - no screwdriver needed just pull and it unclips. Next remove the passenger side kick panel on the transmission tunnel - once again just pull (out and back), it's only clipped in. Next push down the shift release button (in the case of auto transmission) and move the shifter to the "D" position then unclip the surround from the transmission that also houses the 12v accessory outlet. Once this is unclipped you can rotate this anticlockwise to reveal the back of the power outlet.

Use the wire cutters to cut the male end off the extension cable you have just purchased leaving around 1m of cable on the female (outlet) end. Drill a hole in the bottom of the dashboard compartment large enough for the cable to pass through then feed the freshly cut cable through the hole leaving the new power outlet in the dash compartment box (I chose a spot at the front left on the bottom). Working from the passenger side of the car, now that you have everything apart have a look inside and down the cavity on top of the dashboard you have created by removing the dashboard compartment, you will see there is a small gap that goes all the way through to behind this is where you will be feeding the cable. Once the cable is through simply connect the 2 wires of the cable to the 2 wires of the power outlet. Use the multimeter to check they connected them correctly (polarity and connectivity). Refit the parts you have removed and plug in the GPS. You are all done, no more messy cables around the car.

Well done,
I know what you mean about all the wires.
I read my GPS on the R/h side of the windscreen, that way the power wire runs behind the steering wheel to the power socket.

Re: Power outlet in dashboard storage box

I have done this mod in my Series 4 Ti this morning and it's super easy to do indeed.

Here are more pics for you to use as a reference.

The first thing you need to do is remove the top glovebox from its place, you just need to lift it up from the lid with some force:

Photo from the top of the dash revealing the wiring for the Sat Nav

You can then unclip the passenger side centre console side cover as shown below

Image

Image

Make a small hole for the wiring of the extra 12 colt plug to pass through all the way to bottom where you can catch it

Image

Image

Next you would want to tap into the existing 12 volt outlet, so to do that and get clear access to the wiring, I have decided to remove the gear stick surround and it is very easy to do so:

Just unclip the bottom of the gear stick and remove the retaining metal clip and then lift the gear stick from its place

Image

Image

You will then insert a screwdriver into the oval end of the gear stick surround and lift it up gently

Image

Using your fingers lift the rest of the gear stick surround and put it aside, so you can access the 12 volt plug wiring

Image

Image

Tap into the 2 wires (blue and black) that are there and test the connection to make sure everything is wired correctly and power is available from both outlets

Put everything back together and you're done.

Jalalski, youre legend for messing with a brand new car! Was that nav/aucio system original when you bough it or did you fit that yourself. if yourself I would very much like to hear the cost and difficulty.

Yeah Nomand, I actually started modifying the car on the same day I drove it back from the dealership when I bought it emoticon

My wife came out and saw me stripping pieces off the car and said "Here we go again!!!" emoticon emoticon

The sat nav is the factory supplied one here by Nissan Australia for the Series 3 and 4 top of the range models, it is made by Fujitsu/Eclipse and available for purchase from the internet, but you can find much cheaper and better units for your exy by looking in THIS thread and it will give you an idea about the installation as well.

That's awesome.

The only thing I would add is a rubber grommet in the hole to protect the wire from chafing.

Re: T31 Additional power outlet in dashboard storage box

Hey guys just completed this mod. Made some slight changes to what Jalal did.
I removed the dash compartment by just pulling carefully on the lid. The cover around the gear stick and handbrake just pops off. I didn't bother taking the kick plate off.
I used a couple of piggy back blades to 'cut into' the existing 12v wires. This mean no soldering, no electrical tape, no heat shrink etc just a crimp tool required.
Image

Ran the wires down the back off the dash from the removable compartment.
Image

I used a hole saw to cut a round hole to insert the 12V plug
Image

The finished product. I used a plug with a cover so it can be closed when not in use.
Image

And the much nicer looking shorter wire to the GPS.

Re:

I like this idea. I have a blackbox cam on the top of my windscreen and have a cord hanging down which annoys the poo out of me. Is there enough room to mount a plug in the box wall? or lacking spare space around the box. Just for neatness?
