2 Xtrails ruined in one crash!

Well this is never a good start to the Easter weekend, I never thought that I would be cursing a 5 day weekend until this happened! Accident happend on Buckets way in Gloucester NSW as we were taking the back roads to Armidale to spend the weekend with Family

Image

We were hit from behind in a 3 vehicle pile up by another T30 Xtrail who had also been hit by a truck at the back, I dont have the pics of the other Xtrail yet but I will get these of my wife's iphone and add. The other xy has major damage and is surely a write off.

The truck driver had bent down, eyes off the road to pick up his can of coke, looks up as he is crashing into the xy behind us, the lady inside was thown back in her seat which the back collapsed and as she hit us, she was thown into her steering wheel, not confirmed but I think she was not even wearing a seatbelt. She was not in a good way at all.

We got hit twice as the middle xy bounced between us and the truck, the 2nd impact was the hardest and broke the back window, it was quite a hard hit and my wife has whiplash as a result. Luckily I was in the best driving position and was just pushed back into the drivers seat. Thanks to the really efficient Ambos and Police in Gloucester who were there within minutes and had the situation under control, one of the Cafes - Gloucester Pantry (great coffee and food - highly recomended) gave us a free lunch whilst we waited for my sister to come from Armidale to collect us as we were unable to drive the car.

Today a week later I am still waiting for AAMI to get it towed back to Sydney so it can be assesed to see if it will be repaired or written off. Hopefully written off as I will not have to wait weeks to get it fixed when I need a car for my work. The truck company will be getting some letters very soon with the hire car bills to claim on their policy!

Hope everyone had a better Easter than us!

Cheers

Dave

Oh no Dave, sorry to hear about your accident and in such a new car as well. Lucky no one was seriously hurt though.

I hope it's a write-off as well and AAMI are pretty good with their assessments. My wife was involved in an accident in her Tiida and I thought it would be a repair job seeing on the back boot area was damaged and one of the rear wheels, but they said it's a write-off as the entire axle has twisted and it's not worth repairing.

In your case, am sure they gonna check for chassis damage and cracks.

Keep us updated on how you go.

Re: 2 Xtrails ruined in one crash!

I know how you feel.
After 360000kms I had to say goodbye to my baby when I lost the backend in the wet at Beresfield a few weeks ago. I smashed into the guard rail and got slingshot (bloody traction control) over a 3m embankment, landed on all 4 tyres and took out a tree.
To look at the car afterwards it looks like the front and rear bumpers were the only thing damaged. On closer inspection, all the safety features had started to work for me. Bonnet was jammed back, engine mounts were giving way and seatbelts done their job.
I am happy to report however no injuries were sustained (yeah for me) not even a bruise to complain about.
I shed a tear emoticon as I watched her get taken away and was even more devistated when they said it was a write off (just on my accessories alone).
On the upside to my rather large mishap I've learnt a few things
NEVER call your hubby to pull you out of a ditch in his Prado - cause then you need a tow truck to get you both out (yes, the goose got himself bogged) emoticon
secondly - You can crash your xtrail with a full cup of coffee and not spill a drop.
What more can a girl ask for............. emoticon

Re: 2 Xtrails ruined in one crash!

Hi Guys, as promised pics of the other T30 Xtrail that was involved:

As you can see there is a fair bit of damage here and a 12 tonne truck has a lot of kinetic energy even if they are travelling slowly.

We went to the AAMI assesment centre in Bella Vista this morning to collect our gear from the car that we couldnt collect the other day and the damage is a lot worse than I remembered from the accident. Back end is twisted out of allignment as you look from the back towards the front, you can see this through the back window but also looking across the roof on the outside. Back passenger seats were pushed forward, partly by the false flooring above the drawer and off their propper mounts. As I had to fold the seats forward to retrieve my gear from the back (back door will not open at all) the seats came off and will now not fold back correctly at all!

I am relieved to see a yellow sticker in the windscreen from their preliminary assessment which reads "Statutary Write Off". I don't think I would want it to be repaired as it would never be the same.

Needless to say it was quite emotional as we loved this car!

Drive safe out there everyone and I hope never to see an xtrail in this state again!

Cheers

Dave

Re:

Ouch, that T30 copped it pretty bad for sure.

Dave, doesn't AAMI offer new for new car policy which I think entitles you to a new car of the same make, model and colour if it is less than 12 months old? I thought it was AAMI and NRMA that offered this.

Re:

Yep Jalal, in fact even better:

AAMI comprehensive car insurance policy booklet, pages 9-10:

"If we declare your car a write-off because of damage or theft within the first 2 years of its original registration, we will replace it with a new car and pay the initial on-road costs.

The replacement car:
will be of the same make and model as your car,
will be fitted with the same insured options and accessories as those fitted to your car, and
has to be locally available. If it is not locally available, we will pay the agree value."

Re: 2 Xtrails ruined in one crash!

Thanks Brendan, I also was meaning to post this info from AAMI policy booklet, been busy with all sorts since the accident, mainly chasing insurer of the truck at fault to reimburse me for car hire expenses.

As I have part finance against the car, it looks as though AAMI will actually pay out agreed value so they can pay out the loan and forward the difference to me in cash. This depends getting the bank to agree with AAMI's policy on this. The consultant at the bank i spoke with yesterday knew nothing about this and it would most certainly have to be escalated to a higher manager to approve. Talk about red tape!

Sadly if it goes to a pay out on agreed value we may have to look at replacing the Xtrail with a smaller alternative as we can take this opportunity to reduce our debts. Also if there is going to be a wait on delivery of a new ST-L model which I belive is in short supply since the Japan earthquakes. Because I need a car for my work I will need to go for the option that gets me some new wheels ASAP emoticon

The exy was a wonderful car and it will be a reluctant decision to downsize when I have the carrot of a brand new one dangling right in front of me! This in some silly way could be good for my finances in the long run with the old one being almost due for its 30,000km service and 4 new tyres!

I'm sorry to hear about your accident (just happend to read your post today) and I'm glad that you and your wife were all ok. I'm just too scared to think about something like this would happen to me as we often have our 18 mnths old son in back. I don't think I would have my son in small hatchback again. I hope everything sorted out well for you.
